I only buy plain Greek yogurt. Those fruity little cups of stuff they sell as 'yogurt' - or the stuff endorsed by the actress waving her long $ilver $poon at everyone - are basically sugary pudding with some good bacteria. . .
The last time I shopped I was in a hurry so bought a big container of plain Stonyfield organic plain yogurt since it was cheaper than the Greek brands I normally buy. When I got home I checked labels. Well. . .what a surprise!Athenos Greek strained nonfat plain yogurt tastes the best and has 140 calories per cup, 0 fat calories, 10mg cholesterol, 100mg sodium, 10g total carbs, 6g sugars and 23g protein! Stonyfield organic plain has 170 calories per cup, 80 fat calories, 35mg cholesterol, 130mg sodium, 12g total carbs, 12g sugars and only 8g protein - wow! What a difference. The Stonyfield organic plain does contain 430mg potassium, which is not on either Greek yogurt label, however, the fruits you use in combination with the yogurt are an excellent source of potassium.
Another shocker was Greek Gods traditional plain Greek yogurt. 260 calories per cup, 200 fat calories!!! 60mg cholesterol, 70mg sodium, 10g carbs, 10g sugars and 8g protein. Oikos and Yoplait also make good quality, high protein Greek yogurts. When deciding on a good brand of any food, be sure to check labels.
