This wonderful Costa Rican (Hawaiian) bright, sunny fruit, is an excellent source of Bromelain which is a natural
anti-inflammatory many people take daily, in supplement form, to keep arthritis and
joint pain at bay. It also contains Manganese, Vitamin B1
which people take to keep mosquitos away and lots of Vitamin C. Pineapple also contains enzymes that are beneficial for people who have digestive, stomach or intestinal, problems.
You
can also grow your own pineapple from the top that you would normally
throw away. I haven't succeeded with this yet, but I'm going to keep trying using these directions:
Take
your pineapple, and cut through it horizontally, an inch from the top
is adequate. Place
the pineapple top in a dry place and let it dry out for a week. After
that, pick the dead parts away from the underside of the pineapple.
Take
the pineapple cutting(with green leaves still attached), and plant it
in the centre of very large pot.
Expose the planted pineapple to the sun as often as possible, and
water it daily. The
pineapple plant may look as though it's going to die on you, but
don't panic, It'll come back and keep on growing.
Your new pineapple
plant will take two years before it starts bearing fruit. Pineapple
fruit is ripe when it has developed a yellowish tint, and grown to a
large size. It should be soft to the touch, and have a nice fresh
pineapple smell on its base.
